HYPERTENSION

27 percent global population is under the influence of hypertension that is having systolic blood pressure greater than 140mmHg at clinic monitoring or greater than 135mmHg on ambulatory monitoring. Among the afflicted population 95 percent are those that have hypertension without

any known cause “primary hypertension” and the remaining have hypertension associated with a known cause “secondary hypertension”. Among the manifold rationales atherosclerosis, vasculitis and renin angiotensin system flaws are the most common. The labeling and management of hypertension depends on the continuous one-week monitoring and the stage of hypertension respectively.

When would we label a patient with hypertension? What are the stages and the management of hypertension? The aforementioned query would be explained later in this article.

LABELING OF HYPERTENSION

The criteria of labeling hypertension rely on the following steps

  • 4- or 7-days record of morning and evening blood pressure monitoring
  • If a patient has continuously higher blood pressure that is greater than 140mmHg then the patient would be labelled as hypertensive patient.

MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION

Management of hypertension is markedly depended on the stage of hypertension.

  • Stage 1, having blood pressure between 140mmHg and 160mmHg, is managed by following steps
  •  Dietary modification, smoking caseation, weight loss and exercise.
  •  Pharmacological treatment that is contingent on the age of the patient

AGE<55 = ACE INHIBITORS OR ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKERS

AGE>55 =CALCIUM CHANEL BLOCKERS
