Appearance of premature beats on electrocardiogram (ECG), with normal QRS complex but the preceding p wave of different morphology as compared to normal p wave, is termed as atrial ectopic beats. It can be asymptomatic or may present with heart palpitations or lightheadedness. In most cases there are of no serious consequences but in some cases, it may be a sign of the onset of atrial fibrillations. There is no need of treatment in asymptomatic patients on the other hand b-blockers can be used in symptomatic patients.
